The challenge

A connected lighting controller needed to move to a newer microcontroller platform while supporting Wi-Fi, cloud connectivity, and an existing wireless device ecosystem. Getting each subsystem to work individually was only part of the job: they also had to share memory, storage, and radio time.

The engineering

  • Ported firmware and integrated board configuration, peripheral support, external storage, and development builds for the new platform.
  • Built Wi-Fi onboarding and device provisioning paths, with persistent credentials and authenticated MQTT communication.
  • Worked through legacy control compatibility, schedule ordering, shared-storage access, and recovery when connectivity was interrupted.
  • Used debugger captures, device logs, and companion test tools to separate firmware faults from host and backend issues.

What was verified

Recorded hardware checks demonstrated Wi-Fi onboarding, device provisioning, operational MQTT subscriptions, and control paths. Later verification also demonstrated MQTT recovery after a forced Internet outage without rebooting the device.

These results refer to specific recorded tests. Newer cloud reporting and restore paths had further backend or hardware checks pending; they are not represented here as a completed fleet-wide rollout.

The takeaway

For a platform migration, interfaces and failure behavior deserve the same attention as new features. Test the complete path from user action to device behavior, then test what happens when that path is interrupted.

This anonymized example draws on prior engineering work to illustrate our technical approach. It is not presented as a Tethrio Technologies client engagement.
